Role details

  • Own delivery across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and industrial design disciplines
  • Own each piece from prototype through tooling, production, test, and install
  • Decide what “properly tested” means for a machine no one has built before
  • Keep complex builds from slipping between disciplines
  • Day-to-day delivery with the engineering team — working across mech/EE/SW/ID every day, keeping every project on track, surfacing risk before it lands, and making sure nothing slips between disciplines
  • Schedules, budgets, and priorities across a portfolio of concurrent commissions — owning each piece's critical path from first prototype through tooling, production, test, ship, and install
  • The triangle: you spend most of your day with the Head of Engineering, pull the Artist in for the constant design reviews that keep aesthetics, motion, feel, and sound on point, and loop either of them back the moment a decision needs them
  • Manufacturability — turning genuinely novel designs into something we can build, test, and repeat reliably
  • Test strategy — defining what "properly tested" means for each piece, specing custom jigs and tools, and absorbing the failures we know are coming into the schedule
  • Pre-pitch development — when the studio is scoping a new multi-million-dollar commission, you push the team to lay out viable approaches, ballpark costs and timelines, and prepare the decks they need to quote against
  • The client relationship through install — calm, credible updates that translate studio reality into something the client can plan against
  • 8–12 yrs shipping complex hardware (motors, electronics, firmware, overseas manufacturing)
  • Real factory/vendor experience
  • Calm under install deadlines
  • Eye for aesthetics
  • Fluent enough in mechanical, electrical, firmware, and industrial design to hold your own with every engineer

Description

We’re BREAKFAST Studio, a kinetic-art studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We build one-of-a-kind electro-mechanical sculptures with thousands of individually controlled moving parts for museums, exhibitions, and collectors. We built The Pearl, the largest computer controlled kinetic sculpture on the planet. Every piece is a custom machine: custom PCBs, stepper motion-control, molded parts, firmware, software, overseas manufacturing, all converging into something that has to run flawlessly for a decade. We’re hiring a Senior TPM to own delivery across all of it: fluent enough in mechanical, electrical, firmware, and industrial design to hold your own with every engineer, and good enough to keep a complex build from slipping between disciplines. You’ll own each piece from prototype through tooling, production, test, and install — including deciding what “properly tested” means for a machine no one has built before. You: 8–12 yrs shipping complex hardware (motors, electronics, firmware, overseas manufacturing), real factory/vendor experience, calm under install deadlines, and an eye for aesthetics — the tech serves the art. On-site daily in Brooklyn. ~15% travel. Health/dental/vision, open vacation, summer Fridays. Email lipton@breakfaststudio.com with "HN — Senior TPM" in the subject. I’m the MD and co-founder — I read every email and reply. OR, go here for more info and to apply.
